Description

The System Leader Symposium: Numeracy is a full-day professional learning event for regional education leaders with responsibility for numeracy improvement in schools.

The symposium will explore the latest understandings in key focus areas of the Numeracy Suite of professional learning.

The symposium aims to expand system leaders’ knowledge of and advocacy for the professional learning opportunities provided by the Numeracy Suite. It will equip system leaders to support schools and their numeracy leaders to take full advantage of the high-quality, evidence-based learning offered by the suite.

System leaders can choose to attend the symposium on any of the following 3 dates:

  • Tuesday 24 March
  • Tuesday 31 March
  • Thursday 16 April.

The System Leader Symposium: Numeracy is part of the Numeracy Suite of professional learning. The suite aims to equip schools and their numeracy leaders to plan and enact high-quality mathematics learning and teaching so that all students achieve the deep understanding, mathematical proficiency and positive dispositions that will enable them to flourish.

The System Leader Symposium: Numeracy supports the Professional Leadership and Excellence in Teaching and Learning dimensions of the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes.

Audience

The symposium is designed for regional leaders with responsibility for numeracy improvement, including:

  • Curriculum Advisory Coordinators
  • Differentiated Support for School Improvement Leadership Partners
  • Differentiated Support for School Improvement Teaching Partners
  • Education Improvement Leaders
  • Executive Principals
  • Professional Learning Community Managers
  • Professional Learning Community Practice Instructors
  • Senior Education Improvement Leaders
  • Senior School Improvement Practice Leads
  • Student Achievement Managers.

The symposium will include a school-based investigation, workshops and presentations.

The day will culminate in leaders setting goals for supporting schools in their region, area or network to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.

  • Interview a principal or mathematics/numeracy leader to identify strengths, wishes and first step (short-term achievable goal).

Session 1

21st-century skills in mathematics and mathematical proficiencies

  • Collaborate on a problem-solving task.
  • Reflect on learning for teaching.
  • Analyse student work samples.
  • Analyse videos of teaching.

Session 2

Mathematics/numeracy leadership in your region

Session 3

Understanding change and improvement in mathematics/numeracy

  • Participate in presentation of research findings.

Session 4

Looking ahead

  • Numeracy Suite – understand available opportunities for professional learning for leaders.
  • Set goals for supporting schools in your region/sub-region.
  • Area Workshops – recommend differentiated content for Numeracy Leader Area Workshops.

 

You will:

  • deepen your understanding of the activities, aspirations, goals and challenges of numeracy and mathematics leaders in your region and how you can support them
  • learn about Bastow’s Numeracy Suite and how it supports school numeracy and mathematics leaders to plan and enact high-quality mathematics teaching and learning
  • explore your thinking about effective, evidence-based mathematics learning and teaching practices
  • develop your understanding of change and improvement in mathematics teaching and learning.
