A leadership course for principal class members.

The Harvard Graduate School of Education’s (HGSE) Navigating Complexity is designed to extend and strengthen your leadership skills.

Centred around learning themes critical to successful school leadership, you will explore topics such as equity, social-emotional learning, family and community engagement, school culture and strategy.

By the end of the program, you will have greater confidence in your leadership skills and decision-making abilities, along with the support of a lasting peer community.

Designed for principals and assistant principals.

We recommend that principals attend with their assistant principal/s to help consolidate learning at the school level.

Principal only applications will also be considered, especially from small schools.


Developed by the HGSE and facilitated by HGSE faculty member Katherine Merseth.

Over 6 weeks, you are expected to engage in and contribute to:

  • virtual workshops (4.5 hours)
  • online learning groups (6 hours)
  • self-directed learning.

Virtual workshops are delivered over six, 45-minute sessions.

These sessions will provide coherence and connect overarching themes with current and future work.

Online learning groups

Online learning groups are delivered over six, 1-hour sessions.

These sessions are led by experienced HGSE facilitators and are an opportunity to apply your learning, while a strong peer community will provide a support network to test ideas and problem solve.

Note: online learning group sessions will be scheduled based on the cohort’s availability.


Asynchronous learning activities in your own time include:

  • viewing videos
  • professional reading
  • individual reflection
  • small group sessions.

You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • your leadership practice through the lenses of school culture, strategy, equity, social-emotional learning, family and community engagement
  • new frameworks and best practices for leading your school and managing complex, competing initiatives.

You’ll develop the skills to:

  • implement strategies that will ensure equity and success for all students
  • effectively participate in a community of practice that focuses on the challenges and opportunities in reopening schools.

Fully subsidised by the Department of Education and Training for Victorian government school participants.

Eligible participants can also claim up to 5 days of CRT funding.
