Strategic Management for Principals program pilot

Strategic Management for Principals program pilot

Bastow, in partnership with six DEECD Divisions (Financial Services, Governance and Executive Services, People and Productivity, Human Resources, Infrastructure and Sustainability and Legal), is developing, coordinating and facilitating Strategic Management for Principals – a seven-module program aimed at ensuring principals can further develop and extend their strategic management capabilities.

Module 1 Introduction to Strategic Management was launched on 25 March 2014 when 20 principals attended Bastow. Bastow and the DEECD Audit and Risk Unit worked with the Nous Group to develop and deliver Module 1.

This introductory module explores how strategic management applies to the principal role in schools by looking at strategic analysis, planning, performance management and risk. It enables newly appointed school principals to identify and prioritise their needs, while more experienced principals can use the session to evaluate their current processes, competencies and knowledge against their school strategic plan. The module content refers to the theories of highly respected strategic management experts, including Graham Hubbard, Gary Hamel and Bernard Marr.

Module 1 included a “marketplace activity” where each business unit described the professional learning support that they provide in their specialist areas of management. This gave an opportunity for greater exploration of strategic management in areas such as school climate, legal risk, asset and capital works, and financial management.

A highlight of the day was a discussion panel with two guest principals who described their experiences of strategic decision making. One principal successfully implemented an ambitious IT strategy through clever financial management, and the other introduced a new curriculum by challenging some long-held assumptions.

Module 1 will be delivered in two regional areas and again at Bastow in 2014.
