What is Bastow?

The Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership plays a key role in implementing the Victorian Government’s Education State agenda. We work towards realising core policy objectives – to build the capacity of educational leaders and to identify and develop high quality leaders for the future.

We achieve this through provision of quality leadership professional learning that responds to the ever-evolving needs of primary and secondary school teachers, principals and early childhood professionals.

Bastow is a branch within the Regional Services Group at the Department of Education and Training, and was established in 2009.

What we do

Bastow offers innovative, evidence-based and highly relevant leadership professional learning and events for education and early childhood professionals.

Career stage programs

Our career stage programs are delivered over 12–18 months in a blended delivery mode including workshops, online collaboration, coaching, residential programs and self-directed learning activities.

Each Bastow program focuses on a specific career stage by clearly defining what is required to thoroughly prepare leaders for their role and by providing focused, personalised and explicit support for their leadership development needs, preferences and contexts.

Our courses

To complement our career stage programs, Bastow offers courses that are generally delivered over six to nine months and include up to five face-to-face workshops, small group collaboration, online discussions, and opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills in your school or early childhood setting.

Our courses focus on extending the capability of all education and early childhood professionals to develop change projects and implement strategies to improve outcomes for students and young people.

Our professional practice workshops

These workshops are delivered over one to three days and provide participants with insight into new models and an opportunity to practise techniques with peers and expert facilitators. Our professional practice workshops are highly interactive sessions that focus on specific skill development to meet current demands.

Thought leadership, Horizon and Twilight seminars

Bastow also offers regular evening events to provide a more flexible opportunity to stay informed. Our Twilight events are highly relevant and intensive seminars that focus on innovative pedagogies and current learning theories.

In 2015 Bastow developed a number of thought leadership initiatives to engage education leaders in a dialogue about the broader issues and trends in education. Initiatives include the quarterly Horizon e-publication and associated Horizon forums which both stimulate a new level of professional conversation and connect to a global movement of 21st century thinking, learning and teaching.
